Tree Trimming Frequently Asked Questions
KUB recognizes our customers have concerns about the impact of tree trimming. While we can't compromise on safety or reliability, we do make every effort to consider our customers' input into our decisions and accommodate specific requests to the extent possible. Here are some common questions customers have about tree trimming and contact information on how you can reach KUB to ask questions or make comments/suggestions.
Who will be pruning my tree?
KUB only contracts with qualified tree companies who meet KUB guidelines and specifications.
What if I don't want KUB to trim my trees?
You may opt to hire, at your expense, a tree service qualified to work around electric lines to trim to KUB specifications. Customers who arrange to have a pruning service perform this work, or who have questions regarding KUB specifications or other vegetation management matters, should contact KUB. You can also provide input to a Tree Trim Policy Review Panel made up of representatives from the community, tree professionals, KUB, the City of Knoxville, and others.
What if I want to know exactly which trees will be trimmed and how much before pruning starts?
Please call KUB’s Vegetation Management line at (865) 558-6658 Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. KUB staff will walk your property with you and explain which trees need to be trimmed and what will be involved.
What if I have a special tree that I am concerned about?
If you have a large hardwood tree that you are concerned about KUB trimming, ask to talk to a KUB forester to see if it meets the criteria for
special status trees. Although all trees must be trimmed to achieve the appropriate minimum clearance, special status trees may qualify for an exception to removing all additional limbs overhanging main distribution lines.
Can I be present when trimming is being done?
Yes. Just contact KUB, and we will set up a time.
What pruning method will be used?
KUB uses lateral pruning methods, recommended by the
Arbor Day Foundation, which remove the tree branch back to the closest lateral branch growing away from the electric line, leaving no stub to decay. This helps redirect the tree’s growth away from the electric line. KUB does not round-over or top trees for the health of the trees.
Does KUB have a legal right to come on my property and prune my trees?
Yes. To maintain public safety, KUB is responsible for keeping trees away from electric lines. KUB has a right-of-way or easement along all electric lines and has a
legal right to access the property to properly maintain the equipment
When will I know KUB is pruning in my area? Is there a schedule for all trimming?
You’ll get a letter from KUB at least two weeks before tree pruning on your property’s right-of-way. You will also receive a “Tree Pruning Notice” door hanger at least one week in advance of pruning on your property. You can also see areas where contract crews are working online with the
Tree Trim Map.
What if I have questions about the work being done in my area?
KUB contract foresters make door-to-door notification attempts and leave doorhangers with their direct contact information. Either call them directly or call KUB at (865) 558-6658 Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. After hours, please call (865) 524-2911 and your request will be routed to the appropriate person.
What trees will be pruned?
Contract crews used by KUB are trained to prune only those trees that pose a hazard to transmission and distribution electric lines. Crews consider the tree's health as they maintain the necessary electric line clearance (at least 10 feet for distribution and 25 feet for transmission lines). Trees over the service lines-the lines running from the customer's house to the transformer-are the homeowner's responsibility.
How often will my trees be pruned?
KUB is responsible for maintaining approximately 5,000 miles of lines. Pruning in your neighborhood every three to four years normally achieves necessary clearance.
How much will be pruned?
Crews consider the tree's health as they maintain the necessary electric line clearance of at least 10 feet for distribution lines and 25 feet for transmission lines. From time to time, proper lateral pruning methods require branches to be removed beyond the specified zone to ensure the health of the tree.
Won't that leave an ugly tree?
Lateral pruning may make some trees appear less attractive at first. A few months of re-growth makes a big difference in appearance, however. With lateral pruning, the re-growth is naturally directed away from the electric lines. Another pruning cycle refines the process and improves the shape of the tree.
What happens to the leftover brush and debris?
During routine pruning, all brush and debris will be removed within a couple of days after the pruning.
I guess I've never thought about all of the problems trees around electric lines can cause. What can I do to help?
Thanks for asking! There are actually two ways you can help:
1. Understand why tree pruning is vital for reliable power for yourself and your neighbors.
2. Plan ahead when planting new trees and choose only low growing trees if planting near utility lines. Check out the Plant the Right Tree in the Right Place guidelines on our web site for more information.
How can I get additional information on KUB's tree pruning program or make comments/suggestions?
